Signed First Edition
Simon & Schuster 1995;
Hardcover,
Condition:
Excellent. Dust Jacket: Excellent; now in Brodart
cover. First Edition, signed by the author.
Description:
This major work combines history, politics and science
to outline the story of how, when, and why the hydrogen
bomb was developed. From September 1941 when the
Russians learned of the first Anglo-American atomic bomb
research until the Cuban missile crisis on 1962 when
General Curtis LeMay urged President Kennedy to attack
the Soviets with everything in the arsenal, this book is
full of unexpected revelations. The author used not
only previously undisclosed US sources but also Soviet
espionage documents released by the KGB in 1992.
Whether discussing how Truman bartered nuclear warheads
for General MacArthur’s head to the Joint Chief’s of
Staff during the Korean conflict or how Russia was
essentially defenseless against atomic bombing until the
1960’s, Rhodes outlines how the superpowers have danced
to the edge of atomic war – and retreated from the edge.
